Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning

Professional dental cleaning is a simple and painless procedure aiming to remove plaque, tartar, and accumulated stains on the teeth. This treatment is a crucial part of good oral hygiene, which is why it is recommended to be carried out every 6-12 months.

In addition to helping you maintain optimal oral health, dental cleaning prevents the appearance of cavities and the spread of gum-related diseases, such as gingivitis or periodontitis. At The Dental District, we perform ultrasonic teeth cleaning, an advanced technique that uses a device that combines high-frequency vibrations with a gentle stream of water that effectively removes all plaque, tartar and calculus accumulated on the teeth much faster than manual dental cleaning.

Before and After

FAQs

What are the benefits of Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning?

  1. It helps to prevent gum disease and tooth decay by eliminating bacteria buildup.
  2. It helps you avoid paying for expensive dental procedures in the future.
  3. It’s a simple and painless procedure.
  4. Teeth will feel noticeably fresher and brighter right after the cleaning.
  5. Having it done eliminates the need for more complex treatments, such as tooth replacement, gum grafting, and bone grafting.

What are the differences between ultrasonic and manual teeth cleaning?

  1. While manual dental cleaning generally lasts 40-50 minutes, ultrasonic teeth cleaning only takes 20 minutes to be completed.
  2. Unlike manual dental cleaning, with ultrasound, the dentist does not need to apply as much pressure with the device to completely remove tartar and plaque because the device – thanks to its vibrations and water irrigation – does most of the job itself.
  3. The ultrasonic device allows a much more detailed and deep dental cleaning around and in the middle of the teeth without damaging the gums (as sometimes happens with a manual dental cleaning, where there is usually inflammation post-procedure).
  4. In manual dental cleaning, there is a risk of scraping the teeth due to the nature of the treatment. In contrast, ultrasonic dental cleaning does not wear away the enamel of the teeth because what breaks down and removes the tartar are the high-power vibrations and not the tip of the scalar itself.

What happens during an Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning?

The dentist will use an advanced instrument to gently remove plaque buildup, tartar, and stains without damaging your teeth. The entire procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes.

What's the procedure for dental cleaning?

  1. Initial examination. Before the actual cleaning starts, and with the help of a small mirror, the dentist checks around your teeth and gums for any signs of inflamed gums (gingivitis) or other potential concerns.
  2. Removing plaque and tartar. With the help of the ultrasound machine and a mirror, the dentist will proceed to remove the plaque and tartar around the gums and between the teeth by means of the vibrations and the flow of pressurized water that the device emits. Feeling the vibrations produced by the water being sprayed is completely normal.
  3. Applying polishing toothpaste. Once your teeth are free of any bacterial buildup, the dentist will apply a flavored polishing toothpaste made of pumice and a tiny amount of fluoride.
  4. Coarser than regular toothpaste, polishing toothpaste has a gritty consistency that gently scrubs your teeth.
Applying fluoride treatment. Fluoride treatment is used to protect your teeth against cavities for several months by strengthening the enamel (or outermost layer of teeth). Fluoride varnish will be “painted” onto your teeth with a small brush and since it hardens when in contact with saliva, you’ll be able to eat and drink immediately after.
